Re: Best and Cheapest CISCO Router for VPN and ****t forwarding purpose?

by "Scott Perry" <scott.perry@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Jul 23, 2008 at 11:45 AM

The Cisco 2516 router may have some problems sup****ting your needs.

The Cisco 2516 router is part of the Cisco 2500 series of routers which is

older and at the end of its product sup****t. This particular model has 2
serial interfaces, 1 ethernet interface (10mb/s), 1 ISDB BRI interface,
and
14 hub ****ts.

****t forwarding is part of NAT. The router is already performs network
address translation (NAT) for inside IP address to an outside global IP
address. It can also direct connections to specific TCP and UDP ****ts of
the outside global IP address to specific inside IP addresses on the same
or
different TCP and UDP ****ts. Therefore "****t forwarding" to TCP ****ts 21,

25, and 80 are possible.

As for the VPN, I cannot state this for certian. Do you mean a remote
access VPN from a single PC provided by the Windows 2003 server or a
remote
access VPN provided by the router?

If you want to have a remote access VPN from a PC to the Windows 2003
server, then it is possible using the Microsoft Windows RRAS service.
This
would host a PPTP server connection and this can be possible if you "****t
forward" TCP 1723 on the outside of the router to the Windows 2003 server.
If you want to have a remote acces VPN from a PC to the Cisco 2516 router,

then the router would need an IOS image with VPN capabilities. The
configuration would be more complex than I intend to put into this first
response to your original message.
Both possibilities would allow a remote PC to have access to the internal
network.
