Do you have some reference you can cite that claims this?

Everything I have seen seems to indicate that 802.5 Token Ring does not 
need collision sensing because of the very nature of the token passing 
protocol. Unless you have the free token you can't transmit. There is no 
need to "check first" before transmitting.

Wireless networks use CSMA/CA to see if the channel is clear to transmit.
