I had the a similar problem happen to me when I tried Redhat 7.2 and
mandrake 9.0. Not quite the the extreme that you did(I didn't have to
pull the battery.). I got frustrated and decided to put Windows on the
box.
After I formated the HD (fat32) using a win98 boot disk I decided to try
one more time. I installed Redhat9 and it installed like a dream. In fact
I am typing on it now.
