UC Berkeley student - need information re: notetaking pay and disability rights

by "H." <hbe123@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Feb 7, 2007 at 12:22 AM

Hi. I am a student who attends the University of California at
Berkeley, and require notetakers in cl***** where it is difficult to
type notes, such as math and cl***** that require copying diagrams.

Several students who require notetakers at Berkeley, including me,
cannot find them in a timely fa****on. It is the fourth week of the
semester, and I do not have a notetaker for the one course which
requires it. I am doing research to find out if this lack of
accomodation is standard or specific to my school, and in any case,
what can I do to fix it.

To clarify my situation, I am registered with the Disabled Students
Program, and have a sheet on file which says I am entitled to this
notetaking service. The notetaking coordinator at Berkeley says that
they are doing everything they can to find a notetaker, but have just
not been able to find one yet. Last semester, several students were
not able to find notetakers at all.

The pay here for notetakers is $40/credit/semester, so, for instance,
a 3 unit lecture class pays $120. Discussion sections are paid
separately at the rate of $40 a semester. A 3 credit course including
discussion is about seven hours of notetaking a week for $160 at the
end of the semester.

Please, I am looking to have some questions answered:
1) If you have had notes provided for you or taken them for someone
else, what was the pay? (And also, what was the year and school, for
reference)
2) Is this current situation legal? That is, if no student in a class
agrees to be a notetaker, is it really legal for the school to say
"Tough. You don't get a notetaker."
3) Whether legal or not, what course of action do you recommend to
remedy the situation?

Thanks in advance.
