Conference Aims and Audience
=20
The Adult Dyslexia Organisation proposes to run a series of high profile =
conferences - in Bristol, Manchester and London that will demonstrate =
Dyslexia Friendly, User Friendly ICT.
=20
The Conference aims to Illustrate where teaching in a dyslexia friendly, =
user friendly way will benefit, not only dyslexics, but disaffected =
learners, other disabilities and older learners. There is a =
comprehensive marketing campaign, which will include contacting over =
8,800 organisations and service providers. We suggest you book as early =
as possible to avoid disappointment. The role of educational =
organisations in tackling issues facing people with disabilities, =
including people with dyslexia, is high on the political agenda and many =
organisations will need to learn more about their responsibilities, and =
about techniques to engage with learners with disabilities.=20

Target Audience
=20
This conference is extremely relevant for anyone working within =
education or training. We will particularly target those organisations =
within e-learning and ICT and the community.=20
Specific audience will be learndirect Centres, UK Online Centres, other =
ICT Service Providers, Centre managers, basic skills tutors, trainers =
and facilitators and Educational Institutions.=20
=20
=20
The Disability Discrimination Act
=20
The Adult Dyslexia Organisation is keen to develop these conferences as =
there is a major challenge facing Learning Providers and employers, to =
engage people with dyslexia.
=20
In September 2002 the 1995 Disability Discrimination Act was extended to =
education, and all organisations providing education, training centres, =
adult education institutions, local education authorities and others, =
who acquired new legal responsibilities. No educational organisation can =
treat any disabled student/learner any less favourably due to their =
disability, and must make reasonable adjustments to their courses and =
services for students with disabilities.=20
=20
This conference will therefore be critical in providing information to =
organisations working within the education and training field, who can =
apply simple principles, which will encourage the participation of =
people with dyslexia. NIACE have identified that there is a high drop =
out rate amongst people with dyslexia who apply for courses or send off =
for information. The current design of learning materials often prevents =
participation by people with dyslexia, as they are not appropriate. For =
example, providing speech input and read back facilities, is far more =
user friendly for people with dyslexia and other disabilities people =
with short terms memories and aids that help to build confidence and =
self-esteem and to become a more independent learner.=20
=20
=20
European Year of the Disabled People
=20
2003, is the European Year of the Disabled People and many programmes =
across Europe are being developed to promote activities, which address =
discrimination against people with disabilities. These conferences will =
therefore assist you in meeting the priorities of the UK and European =
parliaments to raise the profile of people with disabilities. These =
conferences will give you the op****tunity to do your bit as part of the =
European Year of the Disabled People.=20
Introduction to Adult Dyslexia Organisation
=20
=20
The Adult Dyslexia Organisation (ADO)
=20
ADO is the national organisation for adult dyslexics. It is run by =
dyslexics for dyslexics, and all those concerned with Adult Dyslexics =
providing a wide range of services, both to the public and to =
professionals to service provider and policy makers. Prior to ADO`s =
establishment, there was no specific voice for the large number of =
adults with dyslexia - currently estimated at over 2 million severely =
dyslexics in the UK.
=20
ADO works to address the particular and very different needs of dyslexic =
adults by providing the following services:
=20
a national helpline manned principally by adults with dyslexia
a wide-ranging information service including a magazine and =
website
training and consultancy
referrals to professionals (tutors, psychologists and trainers =
etc)
advice on IT (software and hardware)
monitoring provision and services for dyslexic adults
conferences and a range of seminars
the establishment and sup****t of a variety of adult dyslexic =
sup****t groups.
=20
By working with government departments, major organisations, Trade =
Unions, educationalists and employers, ADO works to ensure real change =
that affects the lives of adults with dyslexia. Through effective =
lobbying, we raised the first debate on Dyslexia in the Workplace in the =
House of Lords. We have written definitive guidelines on dyslexia for =
the Department of Work and Pensions, the National Health Service, =
ensured that the Civil Service recognise dyslexia and sup****t dyslexics =
through their Equal Op****tunities Policy. In conjunction with the =
National Welsh Assembly and Ufi/leandirect we provided a one-day =
seminar. Our aim is to demonstrate that "User-friendly for dyslexics can =
be user-friendly for everyone!"
=20
One of our initiatives was to set up new and sup****t existing dyslexia =
sup****t groups. This had been achieved through a regional training =
programme, to establish a network of self-help groups throughout the UK =
in the workplace, universities, colleges and local communities. This has =
gained interest from around the world and has led to ADO groups in =
Brussels, Sweden, Jamaica and Australia. New York to be confirmed.=20
=20
The ADO sits on a range of national committees and government steering =
groups; where they are able to take an informed and wide view on =
disability issues and have built up an impressive network of contacts in =
order to promote a better understanding of the needs and abilities of =
adults with dyslexia. Also, involved in training, negotiation, =
conference planning, the ADO is the first point of contact for =
up-to-date information and advice at mid and high level.Bookings
