I was on my way out of a high school once when I saw them unloading a box
of
new clocks that were going into every classroom. Every clock face was
printed with the slogan ³Just say No to Drugs and Alcohol.² Apparently
some
clock manufacturer was not moving his product and with friends in the
government he was able to put a drug message on the faces and take drug
education money to sell a large number of clocks. The schools took the
clocks because they were free to the schools (of course we all paid for
those clocks with our taxes). I was amazed at the stupidity of this when
I
looked at these clocks. The word ³DRUGS² was in very large type across
the
center of the clock and the other words were printed in smaller red type
above and below ³DRUGS.² When I think back on my high school days, I
looked
at the clock about once every seventeen seconds when I was bored at the
end
of a class. On those drug clocks the red type was harder to see visually
and the hands of the clock, at some times during the day, would block the
word ³no.² So those students who were bored at the end of the day, trying
to think of what they would do when they got out of class, would many
times
look up to a clock with a big black suggestion of ³DRUGS.²
