FREEDOM AND EDUCATION: AN OXYMORON?

by catalope90@[EMAIL PROTECTED] May 12, 2005 at 07:12 PM

One would think an education institution would encourage freedom of
speech and expression. My cousin's experience with her college
education was a contrary. When my cousin and her friends expressed
their anti-Iraq war views on the University of ****tland OR campus, the
university administrators and some hard-core Republican students gave
her and her friends a real hard time. She has recently graduated and
felt relieved from being harrassed by an intense anti-liberal
environment. She felt her freedom was violated by an institution that
was supposed to promote peace and intellectual pursuit. According to my
cousin, the University of ****tland is a strong hold of the
"conservatives" right in the middle of a "liberal" ****tland city. In
fact, she told me G. W. Bush visited the campus several times during
his campaign while no where else in the city would welcome him.

I wonder if oppression of politcal freedom is a typical trend in the
academic world now a day. Since I have not been on a campus for at
least 10 years, I don't know what's really going there. But I would
think a college or university would be the last place to lose such
freedom. In the so called "real world", depending on which company you
are slaving for, many employees are told to be "non-political".
Churches now are blending politics and religion so much more now that
the idea of separation of church and states is a thing of the past.

Quite sad to see where this country is heading to. Also I wasn't sure
what Bush was talking about every time he used the word "freedom". And
I didn't think he knew what he was talking about either.
