I am a musical theatre writer and an activist for disability awareness.
I'm
planning to write a musical, based on a children's book, with a main
character
who is a child with a disability. But first I need to find the right book
to
adapt.
If you know any great picture books with a disabled main character, please
let
me know. Here are the specifications for what I'm looking for:
1) It must be a picture book, suitable for all ages, and the main
character
must be a child with a disability.
2) The main character should be verbal, and able to sing songs. (So
blindness
or paraplegia would probably be better than deafness or severe mental
retardation.)
3) It must be a book with a STORY. Not "This is how Sally gets on the
bus, and
this is how Sally goes to school"; an actual story where we follow the
main
character through some life events.
4) The book must be in print, so that schools and other youth groups can
order
it in large numbers.
5) But it shouldn't be a hot property, owned by a major book publisher.
That
might mean I couldn't get the rights to adapt it.
I know these are a lot of specifications! But don't worry so much about
the
last two: if you know a good picture book, with a story, and a disabled
main
character, let me know. I'll worry about who the publisher is.
Thank you so much,
