If I were a child in the Phils I would wonder if it were worthwhile to
go to school and university for 20 years to make a salary sufficient
to subsist.
Or alternatively, add ten more years to the twenty and $5000, emigrate
to a progressive land, make more money putting your college degree to
work as janitor, send most home, and subsist.
Its called despair. And of course the traditional alternative in the
Philippines (and most other places) is some scam, some trick to screw
somebody, and get rich (or get time). As with most gamblers, the
mentality is to "figure out those machines and beat them", in the
process getting hooked by a one-arm bandit and morphing into a Pavlov
Dog (Pig?).
