another flaw in "Yahoo Groups member****ps = popularity" idea

by Rick Harrison <none@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Jul 28, 2007 at 02:26 AM

Previously we discussed looking at the number of members and amount of
activity in Yahoo Groups as a way to estimate the vitality of varius
conlangs. As I look at the member list of the Toki Poni group, I
discover another flaw in this technique. Many of the "members" are
bot-created spammer accounts!

alexis-sabry256@[EMAIL PROTECTED]
so forth, all tagged as "bouncing" (meaning the accounts have
been deleted and email from the group is not reaching them). There are
also quite a few legitimate human-created accounts that are now
bouncing for whatever reason.

I am too lazy to look at the entire list and count the number of
accounts that are bouncing, but it is clear that the number of
_functioning_ email accounts on the TP group is much lower than the 310
that shows up on the group's homepage. Apparently dead email accounts
can stay on the list and continue to be counted in perpetuity.
