I heard this on the news. They aren't the only one doing
something like this. I'd guess it's probably more of an excuse
to save money. The server and bandwidth loads are certainly
heavy for carrying newgroups. The whole "child ****" excuse is
weak at best. There are plenty of other means still available
for traffickers who could just disguise the group under another
unaffected group. I hope there's a big consumer backlash to
this decision. Something like that would certainly make me go
shopping for another ISP since I tend to use Usenet a lot. Yes,
one could still access Usenet through Google Groups and other
sites, but that means using their interface instead of the
convenience of a good newsreader.
I use Comcast who still isn't affected (and hopefully won't be),
but they actually contract out Usenet to an outside party
anyway. My only complaint with them is the 2GB limit. Higher
limits are available but the price is too steep.
