The reconstruction of an original laryngeal isn't based specifically
on Greek evidence, but rather on Benveniste's venture that CVC- is the
normal structure of a PIE root, so initial laryngeal must be posited
in roots which were first thought to be vowel-initial.
There are still various views on the odd initial rough breathing of
the Greek, ranging from borrowing from a neighbouring dialect where
the laryngeal was retained, to the influence of sandhi.
