Thanks Ed and B.T.,

I think what made me reluctant to read 'accipiant' as an optative
subjunctive when first encountering this phrase was that I'd learnt
that qui + subjunctive could be one of  5 constructions, viz:

1-  adjectival purpose clause
2 - generalising adjectival clause
3 - adjectival clause of result
4 - a causal/concesive clause
5 - virtual Oratio Obliqua

I suspected that things might not be quite this simple (it never is
with Latin) - I suppose one has to guard against inflexible reliance
on such tables and rules.
