Actually an Islamic state, where they call the prayers from the top of a
minaret, and the faithful lay their prayer-mats out facing Mecca, isn't
that far away from feudal Europe.
But, but, but! William of Normandy got the pope's blessing before
invading our sceptred realm. And that gave him such empowerment to
build a fleet, call in sup****t from all around and come and dethrone the
Confessor's duly appointed heir (and, of course, keep him on the throne
afterwards).
Now, here's the great divide, my friend. Who is better qualified to make
such decisions? The pope or a politician? Which, I guess, boils down to
a theological or a secular state.
