Hello Arabic speakers and Arabists,
Here's a newbie question to get a discussion started!
As we may know there are many dialects of Arabic, some not mutually
comprehensible. Educated Arabic speakers all tend to know Standard
Arabic, which is based on Classical Arabic, and understood in most
Arabic speaking countries. However in a story about a student in
Morocco, she was cautioned by friends to avoid speaking "Classical
Arabic" when doing her shopping in the market--people may make fun of
her, or worse, find it a bit blasphemous. So in this situation would it
be safe to use Standard Arabic (even if it's not so different from
Classical)?
