Hi Uffy, congrats on the above - I'd have been delighted to be able to
post something as readable after only 6 months study!....but I am old
and my brain is addled, so one of your months is one of my years (as
they occasionally said in 50s sci-fi movies).
As John says, your question has been asked here before and others will
point you in the right direction for news and transcripts. If you
want to try some films, I would strongly recommend early Chabrol and
in fact the work of most of the nouvelle vague directors from the 60s.
Around this time, actors were generally very clear in their
enunciation, and the language of the scripts was often quite simple.
Rather than watching dvds on a TV, use a software dvd-player with your
PC which slows the film and sound down to manageable speeds without
affecting the pitch (powerDVD and WinDVD can both do this and there
may be others). The idea is just to take the film dialogue a line at
a time and try to decipher it. You might find initially only being
able to figure out 25% (or even less), but with repeated viewings
you'll gradually raise this figure. Don't be alarmed when the
sub-title doesn't literally match the spoken line - this is common
and, in my opinion, an extra and useful test in understanding what is
being said. Good luck!
