Hello,
Juliette's pronunciation is perfect, whereas Alain's is very funny (I can
hear something that sounds like "ratasouris", which definitely wouldn't
make
me feel like having some)!
Yes, in French, we pronounce "rat" in ratatouille like in rat, gratter,
pratique,... and in every word where we meet this 3-letter group: r-a-t.
Did you pronounce it like the English "rate" ? (with the sound "a" as in
hate?). In French, that sound corresponds to "ay" like in "payer", or
"eill"
like in "oreille".
But "a" is always a very open vowel, and sounds like in "hat".
You can listen to some words with this open "a" (like in parapluie) and
the
sound "ay" (like in crayon), here :

I'm planning to make other pages like this one and, probably, to propose
an
interactive activity with flashcards.
(I'll let you know as soon as it's ready!)
Best regards,
Jeannielle
