a couple questions

Hi, I'm having trouble with these two sentences. 

The ****tion after 'en projetant...'

Ils ont montré que le noyau d'un atome pouvait exploser en projetant au 
loin certains produits de son explosion.

and I understand the words but not the meaning of this one below.

Elle s'ajoutera au programme dont pâtissent les candidats aux grandes 
écoles ou simplement au baccalauréat, et n'offrira plus l'intérèt de la 
recherche.
