I think I'm inclined to agree; they used to use RP and should have just
left it be, really.  Only people complained, because it sounded "snobby"
as nobody spoke RP so next thing you knew is that loads of Cockneys were
to be heard waffling away.  Then it was too London-centric so before you
knew it the airwaves were full of Scousers and Geordies with nary an RP
or Cockney accent to be heard.  Coincidentally, such was the exodus of
Geordie-speakers to national TV and radio that the region's TV announcers
all spoke some version of RP or "estuary;" I knew something was badly
wrong when I visited late last year and even Mike Neville had lost his
accent and had stopped larking about in the middle of news programmes.
Anyway, that's all old news, the Scots have taken over the airwaves now.
