Irish vs. Scot Gaelic

I've been learning the Irish from tape and CD courses.  I was
wondering if anyone out there knows how 'different' the Gaelic which
is spoken in Scotland is from proper Irish...Would a Scot understand
me ? Or should I find a whole new language course to learn?
