Dia 's Muire dhaoibh!
I would appreciate knowing the pronunciation of these
names from Irish history. If there is a difference between
the Old Irish and Modern Irish and conventional English
pronunciations, I'll like to know that as well. I'd prefer
to know how the names are pronounced in Ireland as
I have heard incredible distortions of them on the tongues
of American academics. I'll take a shot at some of them;
I'm willing to be shot down. ;-)
Eochy Feylagh
Eamhain Macha
Fir Bolg - feer bolug? (with a schwa between the L and G)
Leath Choinn - lyah khuing?
Leath Mogha - lyah mow ('ow' as in cow, not as in low)?
Mleadh - milah?
Fodla
Brian Boroimhe - is this always pronounced Ború or is there
another conventional pronunciation of the old spelling?
The Cúig Cúigí: (kooig kooigee)
Ulaidh - ulee?
Laighin - lighin (gh as in light?)
Connachta - con****hta
Midhe - mee
Dá Mumhain - daw moon?
Niall of the Nine Hostages - is it nee-al (i.e. the Gaelic pronunciation)
or nye-all?
Uí Néill - ee nayill? (rhyming with English 'nail'?)
I'm sure more will come up in my reading.
Go raibh míle maith agaibh go léir roimh ré.
Slán,
