Oh, Jonathan. Do start with the alphabet first. Have him practice
writing the letters as both capitals and small case as you teach him.
You might give him just a few simple words & pictures to go with each
letter and sound as you teach him (look at the phonetic website I
mentioned previously). Patience too. At first it may seem to be going
very slowly but he will have breakthroughs. And once you have him
reading somewhat, let him bring things that he wants to read or be able
to read. That can be almost anything from magazines, newspapers,
letters, whatever...
