Speaking for myself, I'm retired. I frequently use my computer to help
others, not just on usenet, do things that are easy for me because I
know how and difficult or impossible for them because they don't. I
don't need or want to be paid. In fact, it would be a huge hassle to
be paid and do it legally with all the attendant paperwork.
So, to pass the time and be of some help to others, I visit usenet and
help in cases where I haven't forgotten so much mathematics that I
still can. I also teach an Excel spreadsheet class for free at the
local senior center. It gives me something to do and is much
appreciated by the students.
That's why.
