Language Barriers

by "Half Pint" <someone@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Aug 21, 2007 at 04:13 PM

I have never posted here, but I'm having trouble finding what I need
online.
I teach VPK (pre-k) and I have a new student who speaks only Mandarin
Chinese. Mom does speak enough English to speak to me, but she is just
teaching her daughter the language.

I feel that -like my Spanish speaking children, I need to learn enough to
speak to them if I'm asking them to learn enough to speak to me. But I
can't find any translations online for Mandarin. I can find how to create

the chinese characters, but I would like to know the basic words a teacher

would need such as: hello, come here, bathroom, eat, quiet, sit, etc.

If anybody could help me out on this I would greatly appreciate it. I
will
ask mom for list, however, if anybody knows of an online resource so I
don't
always have to ask mom, that would be fantastic.

Thanks, and good luck to all the new teachers out there this year.... I'm
bushed!

T
