Early Childhood Education student, learning about lesson plans.

I'm a student at the University of Florida, studying Early Childhood
Ed.
 I am Working on a Technical Professional Development Project for my
Educational Technology class, where I am trying to learn how to use
educational resources to create lesson plans. I have found three
specific lesson plans that I have found through research. I critiqued
these plans according to what I though would be effective for
Elementary School students, and I have chosen these plans because I
think they are relative to the subjects I will be teaching in the near
future.
I am interested in receiving feedback on the effectiveness of these
plans, or any experiences with these teaching methods.

1. Talk Time, a break the ice activity for students, with an emphasis
on Language Art skills:
Involves 4 major topics: Home, School Life, Jobs, and Spare Time.
The students must answer a few fun and simple questions about these
subjects, they will all be able to discuss and co-operate with each
other in the learning atmosphere.
Each student would pick a number between 1 and 20 (or 1 and 30, 40,
etc. if there are more students)
 Then they must answer the question that corresponds with their
number.
Here are some examples of questions:

HOME-
1. Describe your bedroom. Your classmates should be able to produce a
detailed plan of the place, according to your description.
2. In groups, design the house of the future. Show the results on a
poster.
3. Compose an advertisement to sell your house.
4. You have won 25,000 dollars in the lottery. How would you
redecorate your living room?
5. Draw a plan of your neighborhood, show where your house is and
explain how you go to the following places: a) the baker's, b) the
supermarket and c) your favorite disco or pub.

SCHOOL LIFE-
1. Say what your favorite school subjects are. Give reasons.
2. Tell your classmates a funny story/situation that has taken place
in your school.
3. Imagine what a small child would write about his/her first day at
school.
4. Homework is necessary. Discuss.
5. In pairs, list the qualities of the perfect teacher.

JOBS-
1. Think of 3 people you admire because of their jobs.
2. Would you work if you were a millionaire?
3. Write a list of 10 machines/devices that make people'swork
easier these days.
4. How many different jobs can you name in 1 minute?

SPARE TIME-
1. Write the titles of the 4 best films you have ever seen.
2. If you could travel round the world, what countries would you
visit?
3. Tell your classmates about the (computer) game you like best.
4. Tell the class about the worst TV program you have ever seen.
5. Write a short paragraph about your favorite singer/band. Use about
70 words.


2. Sketch a Story: students will be able to learn from stories by
assessing individual reactions:
Read a story to the class ( the book depends on the grade level). When
all students have heard them book tell the class to draw a picture,
without talking to anyone, that shows how the story made them feel.
Then the students should explain their drawings to the class and how
it represents the story to them.
The students may also write a few sentences or a paragraph or two
about the story.
The sentence could be describing the picture that they created, how
the story made them feel, or a short summary.


3. M&M Graphing: focuses on math and computers.
In this lesson students receive a handful of M&M's in a plastic bag
and are asked to estimate how many of each different color they have
in the bag.
The estimates are recorded, with color coordination of marker color
and M&M color to make it easier.
Have the students create a spreadsheet with columns and rows with
labels of "estimate" and "actual" colors.
Color coordination can also be used by changing the text color, making
the graph easier to understand and read.
The students must then convert their spreadsheet into a bar graph,
with a title.
