Riots broke out over the weekend and continue in much of the Muslim world
in
reaction to Pope Benedict XVI giving a speech in his native Germany in
which
he referenced comments of a 14th century Byzantine emperor that
characterized as "evil" the tendency within Islam "to spread by the
sword."
Alluding to "jihad" and "holy war," the pope said, "Violence was
incompatible with the nature of God."
On Sunday Islamic militants shot to death an Italian nun in Somalia.
The seemingly steadily spiraling conflict between the West and militant
Islam has often been characterized as "a clash of civilizations." It's a
misnomer. Civilized cultures don't riot in the streets, threaten the death
of the pope or murder innocent nuns.
