[Steve's note:  Even if you're a dedicated Windows user, I highly recommend
getting a LiveCD of some flavor of Linux, making sure it will work with
your
hardware, and keeping it around in case Windows up and dies on you.  A
Knoppix
LiveCD saved most of the data on my wife's laptop.  These HOWTOs will
become
invaluable then.]
