Dear newsgroup members,
we at Frymer & Co. are currently trying to develop an intuitive and
easy to use online translit tool located at http://translit.us/
Briefly, this simple web service converts on the fly letters typed in
Latin into Cyrillic (currently only Russian version). This is
especially helpful for people who need to use Russian alphabet but
have no access to Russian keyboard or Cyrillic layout on the system.
There are several known "mappings" of Latin letters to Cyrillic ones.
One of them, and probably the most official one is the ISO 9
(equivalent to the Russian GOST 7.79) standard. We tried to keep our
service as close as possible to this specification, but unfortunately
we met some problems with letters such Cyrillic letters as
"Yer" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yer)
and "soft sign" (http://
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soft_sign). In ISO 9 is not distinguished
between CAPITAL and normal writing of the letters. We changed the
rules a bit and the result is available here: http://translit.us/
I would kindly ask those colleagues, who are familiar with the
subject, to check the current state of our translit service and
provide the feedback on two subjects: correctness of the
transliteration mapping and usability and intuitive aspects of the
service.
We will be more than happy for any feedback and will try to improve
the service.
Frymer & Co.
