There is academic performance, and there is academic
performance.  The results of academic performance 
are valid ONLY if the courses taken are comparable.
They are not, and those in strong academic departments
know this.  Most departments give service courses for
those who claim they will not use the material, and
even courses for students just trying to be allowed
to put a BA after their names.  Students with high
IQ's are scarce in such courses.

Grades obtained are so bad an indication that when
I look at applications I never look at the GPA; this
comes from decades of experience.
