It's probably about 1-1 when it's a class I've taught several times, more
if
it's a new course. However, the same was true when I was an elementary
school teacher, with a pay rate that was substantially less per hour (but
was full-time with benefits). I do have access to GAs for some of this (we
have one shared between four adjuncts, who essentially do one full-time
job
in the department. We also share an office.).
As a part time job, while I'm mostly at home with my daughter, teaching a
few cl***** a week while she's at preschool works well, because I can work
the prep, grading and so on around her schedule without problems. But I'd
hate to be depending on this as a stable source of income, because it's
not.
I know my schedule for fall, but realistically, it's all dependent on how
many students sign up for which section of which class on what days-and if
they don't sign up for mine, well, that's income from one class I won't
get-after I've already done a good part of the prep for the semester. And,
realistically, if I get to the point of needing and wanting a full-time
job
again, I'll probably end up going back to the public school system,
because
it's unlikely my department will ever hire a full-time person instead of
several adjuncts for the cl***** I currently teach.
