there is no such thing as one 'valid test' for 'mean global
     temperature'

there is not some 'average temperature' out there....
there are only agreed definitions of an average temperature....
   along with instructions on how to take appropriate reading....
   and then instructions on the process of calculating your defined
   'average'

what is necessary is repeatability of the process....
then gathering series of data...and then comparing those
    series...eg year to year....
