Without knowing your financial situation, one cannot say whether you are
doing anything wrong or have any options to reduce it. Many people find
the EFC higher than they would want it to be.
As for classifying your son as an independent student, that's not your
choice. Unless he can answer yes to at least one of questions 48-55 he
is a dependent student for financial aid.
