INTERGRATING COLLEGE

STUDY SKILLS

By Peter Elias Sotiriou

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the second edition of Integrating College Study Skills, I have
attempted to refine what has proven to be a successful study skills
text. First and foremost, many users have asked for more exercises
using textbook material, so I have included a textbook exercise at the
end of the exercises in Chapters 3—8. I have also extensively revised
the exercises on making inferences in Chapter 6, on paraphrasing in
Chapter 8, as well as the exercises on condensing and using
abbreviations in Chapter 10, in order to give students a better
context in which to answer these questions. And in those exercises
that I have kept from the first edition, I have updated and changed
about 30 percent of the material. Finally, you will find two new study
reading selections at the end of the book.

I have also revised all of the introductions—including updated
research in study skills, language instruction, and cognitive
psychology. In addition, I have condensed wherever I could; you will
find that the introductions are shorter and more concise. I hope this
change will make the introductions easier for students to read and
easier for instructors to teach from.

What I have kept from the first edition is the text’s careful
sequencing and its challenging, college-level material. I still find
the sequence of chapters from “Locating the Main Idea” to “Applying
SQ3R to Textbooks” to be a sound pedagogy. Also, I have retained the
sequenced progression of exercises in each chapter, so that each
exercise is more challenging than the previous one. Finally, I
continue to use in my exercises and examples topics that incoming
college students will find in their courses—issues from the
humanities, social sciences, and sciences.

I hope that this second edition will even more effectively accomplish
what I set out to do in the first edition: to make students better
readers, listeners, and writers of college material and to make them
aware of how reading, listening, and writing use similar thinking
skills.
