[GEN-BENELUX] Help for genealogy research in Gent

by "Nancy Lee" <lee.n@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Jun 6, 2008 at 11:50 AM

I have just joined the mailing list and would like some VERY BASIC
help and advice. I will be in Belgium for 4-5 days in early July and
would like to do some research on my maternal grandfather and other
ancestors. I know that my grandfather and his parents immigrated to
the U.S. (Chicago) from Gent in 1906. My grandfather was born in
1885. Their last name was Wissaert, which was changed to Wissart in
the U.S.

I plan to spend some time in Gent, seeing what it was like. I'd like
to find any records that might indicate where my grandfather lived,
and other records such as birth, marriage certificates. It would be
great if I could find out names and other information on his parents
and grandparents.

I don't speak Flemish/Dutch at all (I do speak passable French) so I
am worried about my ability to read official records.

Any suggestions that you have to offer are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Nancy Lee
