I understand that Gramps at

used XML as 
its database format in earlier versions.  It now uses RDBMS internally 
but will still im****t and ex****t XML.

This is more or less the pair of choices I'd have made for myself.  I 
might not, however, have chosen Berkeley DB as the database as not only 
is it not SQL-based, it isn't, as I understand it, suitable for storing 
its data on networked drives.

It's the package I use but it's still far from what I'd like to have 
available.
