	Then call me "odd"... <G>

I've had three Maxtor firewire drives (well, in truth, I still have
two; the first died last year January and the third is its replacement
-- and I've been worried about that one; for the first two hours or so
after power up it sort of buzzes; the "second" was originally bought for
my laptop). I've /never/ used their convenience software for backups.

My old W98se machine had a version of BackupExec -- though that
company no longer sup****ts single-user desktop environments, so WinXP
laptop and desktop are running different versions of NTI BackupNow
(having an old copy on the laptop isn't that bad -- 1) it isn't used
that much these days, 2) with a DVD burner on the desktop, it is easier
to network the laptop and do backups via the desktop and the newer
version of the software <G>)

I did refrain from making an original reply -- as I'd have
essentially said: 1) connect drive, 2) start separately purchased backup
utility [BackupNow, or the backup utility included with Roxio Easy Media
Creator /deluxe/ -- which may be vaguely related to the extinct
BackupExpress [I did see a mention on one web page that /something/ was
sold by the makers of BackupExpress to Sonic, who now owns Roxio], 3)
configure software to save to external drive, 4) run backup with
verification...

NOTE: the verification often re****ts errors under WinXP -- as
various system log files (and similar) were either locked as open and
not backed up, or have changed contents between backup and verification
pass.
