Ted,

I've had the R1800 since they came out.  I've never bothered to use 
the paper roll.  I use C size paper for family trees and maps.  If I 
ever want to print out a tree on a roll, I'd turn that project over 
to Wholly Genes who uses 36" paper in the plotter, IIRC.   That makes 
a better gift.
