Drouin is currently in a legal action against Ancestry. A part of
the problem is that Ancestry will likely not index the records as
required by the agreement they have. Thus far, their "index" is
merely retyping the names in the margin and very far from what
users, the Institute and the PRDH expected. The agreement said that
they should put the image on the web only after they were indexed
(and, yes, I have read that agreement and the representative of
Ancestry was there at a time when I had it in my hands).

You can check the communique (in French, sorry) on their web site
at http://institutdrouin.com/
Follow the link under "Mise au point
sur le Fonds Drouin" for the details.

Why do you wrote "bigger chunk" etc. ? Have you seen anything of
that job ?

While I participated to some of the exchanges between Ancestry and
the Drouin Institute, I am not an official spokesman about that
subject and will limit myself to what is on the web site of the
Institute.

One major concern in the French records is that they are texts not
easy to index without reading all the record, unlike for example the
recent vital records. You will have the same problem with the
French records before 1792. My feeling is that Ancestry just can't
process those old records (too expensive) and many local
genealogical societies won't give their help. Also, my feeling is
they overestimated the revenue they could get from those records.
