Hello,
For no particular reason the other day I was wondering if the Marquis de
La Fayette, that is Marie-Joseph-Paul-Roch-Yves-Gilbert Motier, marquis
de la Fayette, has a royal connection to any French kings or for that
matter royalty in any other countries. Does anyone know if this is the
case? He was of the provincial Auvergne nobility and perhaps too remote
to Paris to have his ancestry cross paths with any royals.
His Motier ancestry is easily found in Père Anselme's Maison royale de
France, vol. 7, pp. 56-67, and Potier de Courcy's additions and
corrections, vol. 9, part 2, pp.502-503. With some effort I should be
able to trace out his ancestry, but as this is just a passing fancy, I
am hoping someone else has already done the work.
Arnaud's bibliography points to Comte Georges de Morant's Le sang royal
de France, (1920-1930), vol. 3, as perhaps containing a royal connection
for the Motier family. Has anyone seen this work? The subtitle
indicates that this book traces the descents from royalty through
feminine lines.
I noted that Ancestry.com has some fragments of the Marquis' ancestry,
but this source is not very reliable and in this particular case it
appears to be seriously mistaken in his de La Rivière ancestry.
Any information to help satisfy my intellectual curiosity would be
appreciated.
JP
