If the person making the list at the time knew the  year of
arrival, they might put it down.

Yes.  I just wasn't completely sure it said what I thought
it said.  The title was "families established" which could
mean to an English speaker the year they settled there
or the year the married and thus became a family, or merely
that in that year they were already established.  So I guess
the author was trying to make sure everyone makes the
correct choice of those three.
