Sir Joshua Colles Meredyth, died 27 July 1850, in his 80th year.
The obituary in the Gentleman's Magazine (Oct 1850, p.436) says he
"was knighted May 16, 1794, by the Earl of Westmoreland, the Lord
Lieutenant of Ireland, being at that time a Captain in the 89th Foot.
He also received the order of Military Merit from Louis XVIII, and
that of Louis of Hesse, from the Grand Duke of Hesse; and he was a
knight grand cross of St. John of Jerusalem." My understanding is
that the knighthood in 1794 was because he claimed entitlement to
knighthood as the eldest son of a Baronet.
What order is likely to be meant by "order of Military Merit from
Louis XVIII"?
Is there any way I can verify that he got any such honour (and, if he
did, how and why)?
