Dear Adrian, etc.
I was correct in my statement that the spelling of the English
medieval baronial family is Holand, not Holland. Adrian's specific
question was about Sir Robert de Holand, a member of the medieval
family, who married Maud la Zouche. His correct name is Sir Robert de
Holand. Regardless, I believe modern descendants such as Adrian's
family in Devon****re spell the surname Holland.
Not surprisingly, sometimes there is a variance between the medieval
spelling of a surname and modern spellings of that name. One name
that has caused consternation is the Poynings surname. Modern
historians uniformly spell the surname Poynings which is the modern
parish name in Sus***. But, in the medieval period, the name was
spelled Ponynges (or similar variants), never Poynings. I try to
show both spellings in my writings.
Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah
