I understand now. I thought it was the same as the others. No need to
explain any further. :)

I fear this has not left things clear. The GEN-MEDIEVAL list is
theoretically like other RootsWeb lists, with one critical difference,
and that difference make all the difference in the world.

First some history. This community was first created as a USENET
newsgroup, soc.genealogy.medieval. At the time it was created, people
were rather naive about what would become of USENET. There were a few
specific issues that were recognized as a problem, but in general
there was thought to be no need for moderation, and hence any attempt
to create a moderated group was considered to be in opposition to the
general ethos of freedom on the internet. Thus, unless there was a
very good reason otherwise, every new group was created unmoderated,
and such was the case for s.g.m (and had it been proposed as a
moderated group, it likely would not have succeeded in the creation
process - in other words, moderation was simply not an option).

When the group was created, it was recognized that some participants
prefer to participate in such discussions through email instead, and
so the GEN-MEDIEVAL list was created as a way for people to follow
soc.gen.med by email. A gateway was created which would pass all
material from the group to the mailing list, and vice versa. However,
this gateway is, by its nature, unable to screen for content, and what
that means is that since soc.gen.med is unmoderated, so must GEN-MED
be. Every post to soc.gen.med crosses to GEN-MED with the exception
of a few very specific criteria, which are screened for automatically
and over which the Listowners have no control. It would be possible,
in theory, to have the Listowners screen material submitted directly
to GEN-MEDIEVAL, but not that coming from soc.gen.med, but all a
'banned' poster would have to do is submit through s.g.m, and they
would bypass any ban. This makes the moderation of the GEN-MED side
alone pointless.

The group is thus completely unmoderated, and will stay unmoderated as
long as the gateway continues to link the two halves. (And of course
now someone chimes in with the repeated suggestion that the halves be
severed, but that Solomonic solution may well divide the dwindling
number of knowledgeable posters to a degree to which both groups lack
a critical mass.) Everyone just has to make the best of it.
