Hi all,
Recently I was looking through
Oxford Dictionary of English Surnames by Reaney and updated by Wilson 1997
and a couple of surnames that I am interested in were noted therein.
Greville ....William de Greiull 1158 (P Nb) [from Greville (La Manche)]
Battely.... Otto de Bateley 1191 ( P Y)
Battley.... Ephraim Batley 1672 ( H T Y)
I have tried to ascertain what the letters relate to on the ends of the
entry line viz (P Nb)
but I couldnt see what they meant.
Does anyone here know to what they refer, OR alternatively give me a lead
to
where
I might find anything that relates to those entries, as I have googled for
various variations
but have found nothing which might suggest the source(s) of the entries.
The first William de Greiull entry perhaps suggests to me that it is in
France ...the "Le Manche" bit...is this a reasonable assumption?
With the Greville line, I have brick walled at 1254 and been unable to get
it back any further,
and this may just be the brickwall getting "jack hammered" hopefully...who
knows!
The family stories (wives tale type) have always said the Grevilles came
across with William 1,
but I havent found any solid link todate.
regards
John H
