Re: The Comyns

Dear Taf,
I have little problem with John Comyn living to the age
of
65 or so, given that David, King of the Scots appears to have lived to
about
68 (abt 1085-1153 ), King Henry III of England living to 65 his son
Edward I
to 67, William Comyn, Earl of Buchan was at least 70, his son Walter,
Earl of
Mentieth was mid 50s- to mid sixties (died 1258) William of Buchan`s
father
Richard was likely born by 1123 (based on possession of Northallerton
Castle, assuming 21 years to be the age of majority) He lived to the age
of 56.

I agree it is unlikely that William, Deacon of Worcester was anywhere
close
to 88. Given the timeframe of his career chancellor`s clerk 1123-33,
Chancellor of Scotland 1133-1141, holder of the Bishopric of Durham
1141-1144, and
Deacon of Worcester 1125-1141 and about 1157-1159, a likelier birthdate
might be 1100-1105, making him Chancellor`s clerk at 18-23, Deacon of
Worcester
at 20-25, Chancellor at 28-33, Bishop at 36-41 and dead at 54-59 (these
admittedly being low estimates) I have to wonder about the letters St
Barbe`s men
who authored Dialogi Laurentii Dunmensis ( Surtees society) claimed were
forged. How would Comyn keep his life, much less bargain his way out of
the
Bishop of York(whose Dean St Barbe had been) sentence of excommunication
in that
very year if such a act had been committed. The Holy See would not have
ignored any such action. As it was , William was restored to his
benefices in not
more than 8 years and apparently high in Henry of Anjou`s favor in not
more
than 9 years.

Archbishop John Comyn of Dublin would seem to have been born in about
1130-35 (Prebendary of Hoxton in Saint Paul`s Cathedral before 1150 (age
less
than 15-20) If his holding that office is dismissed and the office of
Archdeacon
in 1166 is the earliest attested date then a date of about 1145 could
work
for his birth. In this case as he died in 1212, if the former date is
accepted He was about 77-82 at his death if 1145 then he was about 67.
                  Sincerely,
                                  James W ***mings
                                  Dixmont, Maine USA
