Dear Newsgroup ~
Complete Peerage, 9 (1936): 601-604 (sub Norfolk) includes a good
account of Thomas Mowbray, K.G., Duke of Norfolk, who died in Venice
in 1399. Regarding his second marriage, the following information is
provided:
"He married, 2ndly, in July 1394, Elizabeth, widow of Sir William de
Montagu, and daughter of Richard (FitzAlan), Earl of Arundel, by his
1st wife, Elizabeth, daughter of William (Bohun), Earl of
Northampton." END OF QUOTE.
This information is slightly in error, as the father of Thomas
Mowbray's wife, Elizabeth, was never known as Richard Fitz Alan, Earl
of Arundel. Rather, he was known throughout his life either as
Richard de Arundel, or simply as Richard, Earl of Arundel and Surrey.
For instances of Richard, Earl of Arundel, employing the surname,
Arundel, see Lewis, Pedes Finium; or, Fines relating to the County of
Surrey (Surrey Arch. Soc. Extra Volume 1) (1894): 222; Arch.
Cambrensis 6th Ser. 7(1) (1907): 1=9634; C.P.R. 1374=961377 (1916): 25,
28, 51, 107, 243; Salzman, Feet of Fines Rel. Sus*** 3 (Sus*** Rec.
Soc. 23) (1916): 164, 174=96182; C.F.R. 1368=961377 (1924): 286, 339;
Genealogist n.s. 16 (1899): 162]. I know of no instance of Earl
Richard using the surname, Fitz Alan.
Following Thomas Mowbray's death, his widow, Elizabeth Arundel,
married (2nd) Robert Gou****ll, Knt. (slain 21 July 1403) and (3rd)
Gerard Usflete, Knt. (his will proved 12 Feb. 1420/1).
The date of the marriage of Elizabeth Arundel and her third husband,
Sir Gerard Usflete, has always been rather indefinite. Complete
Peerage, 9 (1936): 604 (sub Norfolk) states that Elizabeth and Sir
Gerard were married before 3 July 1414, citing Cal. Patent Rolls,
1413-1416, pg. 209. This item may be viewed at the following weblink:
http://sdrc.lib.uiowa.edu/patentrolls/h5v1/body/Henry5vol1page0209.pdf
This record indicates that Richard Husewyf, of Rothley,
Leicester****re, was pardoned 3 July 1414, for not appearing before the
justices of the Bench to answer Gerard Usflete and his wife,
Elizabeth, Duchess of Norfolk, touching a debt of =A340.
In the Complete Peerage Additions & Corrections volume [C.P. 14
(1998): 503 (sub Norfolk)], it adds that Elizabeth Arundel and her
third husband, Gerard Usflete, Knt., were married before 18 April
1411, citing as evidence an indenture of that date between Gerard
Usflete and Elizabeth, Duchess of York [sic], which record is found in
Bodleian Lib., Dodsworth MS. vol. 90, f. 150.
In recent time, however, I've encountered still more evidence which
pushes back the marriage date of Elizabeth Arundel and Sir Gerard
Usflete even further in time. Rev. Charles Parkin's History of
Norfolk indicates that Sir Gerard and his wife, Elizabeth, presented
to the church of Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe, Norfolk in the year 1409
[Reference: Parkin, An Essay Towards a Topographical History of the
County of Norfolk, 8 (1808): 58]. This source may be found at the

Thus, it would appear that Elizabeth Arundel (not Fitz Alan) and her
third husband, Sir Gerard Usflete, were married before 1409.
For interest's sake, the following is a list of the 17th Century New
World immigrants that descend from Elizabeth Arundel and her first two
husbands, Thomas Mowbray and Robert Gou****ll. The list of descendants
of the Mowbray marriage includes the immigrant, William Crymes, of
Virginia, whose English origin and Mowbray connections were recently
located by Stephen McLeod. Special thanks go to Mr. McLeod for
sharing his research findings with me.
