Dear Newsgroup,
CP IV, p. 74 states that Dowsabel Tempest, first wife of Thomas Darcy, 1st
Lord Darcy of Darcy, was living in 1503 but gives no source for this
statement. Thomas Darcy married 2ndly, Edith Sandys, widow of Ralph, Lord
Neville, which Ralph died in 1498.
CP XII, pt. 2, pp. 552-3 contradicts vol. IV, indicating that Thomas Darcy
married Edith Sandys between 15 July 1499 and 4 March 1499/1500. It
follows
that Dowsabel was deceased prior to this time and could not have been
living
in 1503, unless there was a divorce. The footnote for the marriage of
Thomas
Darcy & Edith Sandys (widow of Ralph Neville) states it occurred "Probably
before 7 Dec. 1499 (Cal. Close Rolls, 1485-1500, nos. 1157, 1192)."
According to the Vis. of York****re, 1563 & 1564, p. 92, Thomas Darcy &
Dowsabel Tempest were the parents of George, Arthur, Richard & Mabel.
Thomas
Darcy & Edith Sandys had one daughter Elizabeth.
However, Arthur Darcy was allegedly born circa 1505. Richardson's PA3, p.
442, carries this contradictory information stating that Arthur Darcy was
the "3rd son by his father's 1st marriage" but was born "about 1505," even
after acknowledging that Thomas Darcy & Edith Sandys were married "before
7
Dec. 1499." Arthur's approximated birth date is unsourced.
If Arthur was born circa 1505, then he must have been a son of Edith
Sandys.
The other option is that Arthur was born before Dec. 1499. Either way,
this
would be a correction to PA3.
Does anyone have info that would resolve this situation? Thank you.
Hal Bradley
