PA3 correction? - mother of Katherine Huddlesfield

by "Hal Bradley" <hw.bradley@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Jul 5, 2008 at 05:13 PM

Dear Newsgroup,

William Huddlesfield was married twice: (1) Jenet Bosom, widow of Baldwin
Fulford and (2) Katherine Courtenay (see PA3, p. 595).

PA3, p. 185 states that the wife of Edmund Carew, Katherine Huddlesfield,
was the daughter of William Huddlesfield "by his 1st wife, Jennet,
daughter
of John Bosum." Richardson further asserts that Katherine Huddlesfield was
born "about 1478 (aged 21 in 1499)."

Jenet Bosom was the mother of Thomas Fulford, eldest son and heir of
Baldwin
Fulford. Baldwin Fulford died in 1461. His inq. p.m., taken in 1464,
indicates that Thomas Fulford was aged 28 [Chancery Inq.p.m. Edw. IV. File
3
(31)]. Thus, Thomas Fulford was born circa 1436. If his mother was aged
fourteen at his birth, she would be born in 1422. Yet, she is supposed to
be
the mother of Katherine who was born circa 1478. The math would make her
56
years old at Katherine's birth.

William Huddlesfield's second wife, Katherine Courtenay, was married twice
before. Her second husband, Thomas Rogers, was living 10 July 1478
(according to PA3). A post by James Yeowell indicates Thomas Rogers died 5
Oct. 1478. William Huddlesfield and Katherine Courtenay were married by 12
Oct. 1479. If there were a slight error in the record (uncited) that
indicates that Katherine Huddlesfield was born circa 1478, and she was
born
circa 1479/80, she could also be a daughter of Katherine Courtenay.

This problematic chronology has been discussed before (by Henry Sutliff,
among others) but no conclusion was ever reached. What is fairly certain
is
that Jenet Bosom could not be the mother of Katherine Huddlesfield. That
means that William Huddlesfield had another, as of yet, unidentified wife,
who was the mother of Katherine Huddlesfield; or, if the dates are
somewhat
askew, that Katherine Courtenay is the mother of Katherine Huddlesfield.
This latter option does not seem likely, as the will of Katherine
(Courtenay) (Pomeroy) (Rogers) Huddlesfield mentions her daughter
Elizabeth,
wife of Anthony Poyntz, but does not mention Katherine Huddlesfield.

A previous discussion on the newsgroup states "Devon Worthies says that
Katherine married Edmund Carew was the dau of Sir Wm and Elizabeth
Bossome."
It is possible that Elizabeth Bosom & Jenet Bosom have been conflated.
Hopefully this will elicit further discussion.
