It depends whether you want to preserve the original papers, or to
preserve the information they contain.

If the latter, then transcribing them into computer files will buy
you some time.  I use .TXT files extensively which, while not
responding to all the bells and whistles offered by most word
processing packages, make very economical use of storage space and
in many cases can be retrieved by the same exotic WP software.
