As for the change of domain name for RootsWeb.com -- this is merely
for statistical purposes and doesn't have any effect on the workings
of the site.
See the most recent post in the RootsWeb Newsroom: http://

As for Linkpendium containing links to pay as well as free sites --
that's the purpose of Linkpendium, to help people find ALL sites in
which they might have an interest on any given topic. If the site
is a pay site I'd trust that the person can decide for himself
whether he wishes to subscribe. He can also ask someone who does
for a lookup if he only needs a small amount of information that a
particular pay service might have available. Knowledge is power
regardless of what you do with the knowledge such as deciding
whether to pay or not.
[ Bob and Joan are both correct here, but let me add several
more specific remarks.
We try to code any link that leads directly to a for-pay site
with a green "$", so folks know they are commercial links.
We are disappointed that a fair number of the more recent
genealogical Websites can be characterized as "Ancestry traps",
in that they have limited content of their own and then send
folks on to Ancestry. However, we kinda feel obligated to
index the sites that at least have some free content of value.
Finally, whenever we can, we try to provide parallel links to
free sources of the same data. If you know of free sources we
haven't indexed, for heaven's sake tell us using the add-a-link
tool we have on every page. We'll get those sources incor****ated
in our next update, usually within one or two weeks. - Mod ]
